gilson opalGilson Created Opal

Synthetic:  Process Unknown

Identification Tools Required: Magnification

How to Identify:

Primary Test: The “lizard skin” growth structure of the Gilson synthetic opal is an easy diagnostic feature of this material. Unlike anything natural, this formation is easily visible under 10x magnification. This couples with the exceptionally perfect colors of the Gilson created opal make this identification an easy task for even the most novice gemologist.

Secondary Tests: None needed.

Repair and Setting: As a true lab created opal the same care should be taken as would be with a natural opal. No heat, no ultrasonic and no cleaners.
