I know we have a member here that is an employee of JTV. I don't know if you are here to observe and learn, participate or monitor and report back, but I would enjoy a civil exchange.
There are a few practice's that JTV participate's in that I think is unfair and and misleading to their customer's. 1. Claim's of outrageous appraisal's coming in from customer's that have bought from you. Never do you show copie's of these appraisal's, who actually did the appraisal's and how they arrived at the appraised price. No way to verify what your customer or you say is true. 2. Claim's of some showhost's that they saw identical item's selling for thousand's more at some jewelry store in New York or elsewhere. Once again no way to verify this information and misleading. 3. Claim's that those buying certain gem's may receive the same variety of gem up to twice the carat weight. No one sell's gem's like this if all quality factor's are considered. I do not no a single gem dealer that would open up his parcel and say take you pick of any same quality gem from 1 to 2 carat's and call it even. Colored gem's are graded according to color, carat weight etc. and I'm sure you have a staff that grade's and separate's all these gem's using standard grading practice's. This is a start. I'd like to hear your input. |

JB,
After a lot of serious consideration, I have edited my original post to this thread. I believe that Jewelry Television needs to answer your questions posted above. I once again watched Jewelry Television tonight. And I believe that they use deceptive trade practices in their promotions, as you pointed out. I urge everyone to not buy from Jewelry Television until we get some answers. YG Last edited by YourGemologist; 10-08-2005 at 10:06.. |

I have tonight spoken to Jill, a Senior Rep in Customer Service at Jewelry Television, and expressed our concerns. She was very cordial and professional, and requested that I submit our questions to Steve Gordon at Jewelry Television for further consideration and answers.
In all due respect, we will do that. But...until we get some answers, I still have to recommend that everyone hold off from buying from Jewelry Television until we get those answers. YG |

Well, I've had a little time to consider my original post in this thread and have concluded that perhap's I was wrong to single out any particular member or member's that may be in the employ of any particular shopping network and expect them to respond to their companie's marketing polocie's.
More than likely they are not in a position to be a spokesman in regard to those policie's and it would be unfair for me to expect a response in defense of same. For those of you not familiar with JTV, they are a shopping network that sell's jewelry and gemstone's exclusively. They have a live broadcast that air's 24 hour's a day 7 day's aweek 364 day's a year. This in addition to their website that sell's the same merchandise. With a veiwing audience of some 50 million people, by their showhost's account, they are reaching a very large segment of the consumer population. They alternate in 5 hour shift's mostly between jewelry show's and gemstone show's, with new showhost's with each shift change. Usually they have 2 showhost's per shift with one host doing the lead sale's presentation and the other providing "color commentary." Although there may be some pretty fine line's between what is acceptable by the FTC and what is just a bunch of hyperactive sale's bulls..t, they seem to walk this line on a daily basis being careful not to fall off the fence but clever enough to put out enough misinformation or personal opinion to sway consumer's into panic buying or deluding them as to the true value of their purchase's. Most of this thru questionable sale's technique's and unsubstantiated claim's of appraisal's and so on. For now I'm content to see if their is any formal response from their company to our question's. |

JB,
I am sending the questions to Steve Gordon today, with an invitation for him to join us for a civil discussion on these issues. But based on a very, very late night of JTV watching last night, I believe your overview is correct. YG |

Just to let you know I do work for JTV. but I am not here to defend the company in anyway nor will I. I work as an operator, therefore I feel I am not qualified to be a spokesperson for the company. I am going to school to learn respiratory therapy and need the paycheck. My purpose for joining the forums is because I have a passion for gemology and want to learn as much as possible about the gemology trade and may go into the business someday.
